Tips to Assist Your Body with Heavy Metal and Chemical Detoxification
On December 30th, 2021 my home town of Superior, Colorado was devastated by fire. Several homes completely destroyed, pets killed, hundreds now homeless, and still some people as I write this are missing. When I look out from my apartment patio I see some homes standing and others, that once were standing, now just lots of concrete, metal, and ash.
For those of us that have returned to our homes, most of us are reporting severe headaches. The land holds not only the severe trauma and energy of disaster and loss, but is highly toxic with fine particles. Our HVAC systems are full of ash and debris, our water system is saturated with heavy metals, and our routines are disrupted as many of our local businesses are destroyed or closed adding to the environmental stressors.
Smoke exposure can lead to many uncomfortable symptoms: irritated sinuses, eye irritation, headaches, nausea, respiratory complications, and can make preexisting lung and heart conditions worse. Inhaling harmful smoke inflames lungs and airways and leads to cellular toxic overloads stressing all organs and systems of our bodies. With structure fires, like our recent fire in Superior and Louisville, CO plastics and synthetic materials were burned, and have caused toxic levels of exposure where blood is most likely alarmingly acidic with high levels of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
From my perspective as a Functional Medicine practitioner and Psychotherapist we need to focus on self care from all aspects: nutrition, energy healing, community engagement, stress management, deescalation, aggressive detoxification, and home restorations. I am writing this blog to offer you some tips.
Nutritional Suggestions to Support Detoxification:
Lemon Water, and Lots of purified Drinking Water!
Ginger, if you don’t have a juicer go to your local health food store and buy Ginger shots, take up to 2-3 per day for a couple weeks
Cilantro, eat it raw on salads and meals or juice it with greens
Oil of Oregano, add to water, or into your essential oil diffusers
Get tons of live raw fruits and veggies, tons of greens! Buy green juice at your local juicer if you don’t have a juicer, or buy yourself a juicer and get juicing greens. My favorite juicer is the cold press Nama J2 Juicer.
Essential fatty acids are crucial for helping to carry toxins out of the cells for removal. Be sure to get good fats like a spoonful of coconut oil. Remember you can heat coconut oil so you should be using coconut oil if you cook food. Don’t ever heat Olive Oil! It becomes rancid when heating and can cause inflammation. Olive oil is good raw and at room temp only. You can use it on salad, or put in your smoothies, or rub on your skin.
Other great foods for good fats to help detox are raw organic olives, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, pistachios, brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, avocados, almonds, sesame seeds or oil, and chia.
Add phytoplanton and sea algaes to your diet and supplementation ASAP, also include chlorella and spirulina. These are essential for detoxification!
Increase your vitamin C with Camu Camu, tons of citrus fruit, and berries.
Make sure you have plenty of B Vitamins!
Keep up with your Electrolytes, Drink Coconut Water.
Other Tips for Detox!
Epsom salt baths to help replenish minerals! Be sure you are getting good minerals (Magnesium, Potassium, Iron and Zinc) in your diet. This is vital for balancing blood sugar levels which need to be in balance for your body to release toxins. Add healthy salts like Himalayan, Celtic Sea Salt, and Hawaiian Red.
Eat the least Calories with the Most Nutrients!
Stop eating Dairy, Gluten and Refined Sugars!! This will block the detoxification process!
Eat food with Fiber: Pears, Strawberries, Avocado, Apples, Raspberries, Bananas, Carrots, Beets, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Almonds.
Things you can do in the Home:
Air purifier
Put Lavender or Clove or Frankincense oil in an essential oil diffuser.
Get more plants! This will also help those of us who look out our windows and see devastation from the fire with our mental health, having plantlife to take care of inspires hope, and increases the oxygen in our homes.
Filter water with a Berkey water filter or another means.
Use coconut oil on your skin, stop using toxic cosmetics, soaps, detergents, and hair products.
Stop using toxic cleaning products. Use apple cider vinegar and essential oils with water, baking soda, etc.
Change your air filters!
Get the HVAC system cleaned. If you are renting, tell the landlord to get HVAC system cleaned. Call your renters insurance for more legalities.
Energetically stay grounded and focused with your thoughts and meditations! Keep your thoughts on healing and restoration, and God.
Hope these tips help get you started on Detoxing your body and environment! May all Beings find peace, come together to help one another, and be free from suffering.

February 28, 2022 at 4:29 pmAny tips for someone that has chron’s/colitis/lupus? I love coconut, coconut water but every time I have eat/drink it, my insides go crazy & have almost sent me to er with such horrible pain. Same goes for the acidity in the berries, and I’m thinking maybe starch in pears, apples & bananas? They make my throat tight. I’ve been to Drs my entire life and have been diagnosed with a million + things – I just want to live a healthy & happy life and enjoy everything God has to offer. Every Dr stonewalls me at some point. It truly gives the feeling of complete hopelessness, like I’ve been defeated and there are no other viable options when *I know* there are PLENTY of easier/attainable options – just may not be pharmaceuticals that they love to push so much that causes addictions. I just need basics. Start fresh and see what goes.
Thank you for this piece as I hope to get peace from you. 🙏

April 27, 2024 at 2:28 pmHi Nicole, I have just now seen your comment! Two years later, OMG! I am so sorry and thank you for engaging with my post. It is so hard to know what is going on in there ( your body ) through a quick post. Any updates on your condition? Are you taking medications? What is your diet? There are so many things I would need to know to advise you. But ultimately I would suggest a diet closest to Nature, no processed foods. I would first remove dairy, sugar, and gluten, and continue to go deeper. Autoimmune diseases are usually issues with the gut health, malabsorption, parasites, candida, etc. I have found in my own personal healing journey that the raw vegan lifestyle feels the best for me. I eat 100% vegan, and 60-100% raw vegan meaning I do not cook foods and eat fresh vegetables and fruit. I also add nuts, seeds, herbs, and some cooked grains and root vegetables especially in the Winter months. I am thinking of you and hoping that since this post you have experienced improvements in your health. I hope some of my blogs and recipes inspire you and you can always email me at [email protected] for more questions on my coaching and nutrition services. Blessings :)
